Life Expectancy Improves for All

The field of medicine has made enormous strides in improving life expectancy for the entire population, regardless of race.

A review of recent data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows Blacks made the biggest strides in life expectancy, up 10.3 percent from 1980 to 2017, the latest year for which data is available. Hispanics have enjoyed higher life expectancy than both whites and Blacks since data was first collected for this demographic in 2006. Overall, the life expectancy disparity between whites and Blacks has shrunk in 37 years by four percent.
