Following reports that lockdown orders and mitigation efforts to stop the spread of the coronavirus have caused members of the public to lash out, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released tips on how stores, restaurants, and service-related businesses can avoid violence.
The guidance, released on September 1, states that retail services are especially prone to threats and verbal and physical assaults from members of the public and should consider adopting “nonviolent response” strategies. Most states have allowed businesses to reopen with limitations. In some states, businesses can be fined for not enforcing social distancing and mask mandates.
To reduce conflict, the CDC recommends installing security systems, posting signs stating mask and social distancing rules, training employees on threat recognition and conflict resolution, being vigilant to identify threatening actions, and supporting employees who are confronted.
